Subject-Verb Agreement

The grammar outlaw: Disagreeing Subject and Verb, AKA The Disagreeable Sentence

1. The grammar crime:
The subject of a sentence must agree with the verb of the sentence.

2. How do they need to agree?
They must agree in two ways:
· in number: singular vs. plural
· in person: first, second, or third person

a. Question: How do we know we have disagreement between the subject and verb?

Outlaw: They is my favourite Canadian authors.
The subject: They (plural)
The verb: is (singular)
note: The subject and verb disagree in number. Therefore, this is a subject-verb disagreement outlaw.

b. Question: How do we catch subject-verb disagreement?
The following are six situations in which subject-verb disagreement errors can be more difficult to spot.

1. When the subject and verb are separated
Find the subject and verb and make sure they agree.
  • Ignore the words in-between because they do not affect agreement.
Outlaw: The characters in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night lives in a world that has been turned upside-down.
rehabilitated: The characters in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night live in a world that has been turned upside-down.
  • 2. Compound subjects

    • If the two subjects are joined by “and” the verb will be plural in most situations
exception: when the joined subjects are preceded by “every,” “no,” or “nothing”
    • If the subjects are joined by “nor” or “or,” the verb agrees with the closer subject (the last one)

Outlaw: Christie and Prin is characters from Laurence’s The Diviners.
Rehabilitated: Christie and Prin are characters from Laurence’s The Diviners.

    3. Indefinite pronouns

    • single indefinite pronoun: e.g., anyone, anybody, each, either, none
    • They use singular verbs.
    • plural indefinite pronouns: both, few, many, several
    • They use plural verbs.
    • All, any, most, and some depend on the situation. They can be either singular or plural.

Outlaw: Each of Sylvia Plath’s “bee poems” use the theme of beekeeping to express aspects of the human condition.
Rehabilitated: Each of Sylvia Plath’s “bee poems” uses the theme of beekeeping to express aspects of the human condition.

    4. Collective nouns

    • These are nouns that are singular in form, but plural in meaning.
Examples: band, minority, majority, class, community, dozen, family, public, team
    • When they act as one entity, use a singular verb.
    • When they do separate things, use a plural verb, BUT it is easier to reword the sentence. For example, write “the members of the team” instead of “the team.”

Outlaw: The majority of English majors read Conrad’s Heart of Darkness while at university.
Rehabilitated: The majority of English majors reads Conrad’s Heart of Darkness while at university.

    5. Plural nouns that are singular in meaning

    • Some plural nouns take singular verbs, for example, athletics, economics, politics, news, mumps, and measles.
Outlaw: Politics are an issue in R. K. Narayan’s The Man-eater of Malgudi.
Rehabilitated: Politics is an issue in R. K. Narayan’s The Man-eater of Malgudi.

    6. Titles

    • When used in sentences, the titles of books, plays, poems, movies, and so on are singular.

Outlaw: Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children are my favourite novel.
Rehabilitated: Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children is my favourite novel.

    Something to read...

    Email Address

An unemployed man is desperate to support his family of a wife and three kids. He applies for a janitor's job at a large firm and easily passes an aptitude test. The human resources manager tells him, "You will be hired at minimum wage of $5.35 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address so that we can get you in the loop. Our system will automatically e-mail you all the forms and advise you when to start and where to report on your first day." Taken back, the man protests that he is poor and has neither a computer nor an e-mail address.

To this the manager replies, "You must understand that to a company like ours that means that you virtually do not exist. Without an e-mail address you can hardly expect to be employed by a high-tech firm. Good day." Stunned, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and having $10 in his wallet, he walks past a farmers' market and sees a stand selling 25 lb. crates of beautiful red tomatoes. He buys a crate, carries it to a busy corner and displays the tomatoes. In less than 2 hours he sells all the tomatoes and makes 100% profit.

Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 and arrives home that night with several bags of groceries for his family.During the night he decides to repeat the tomato business the next day. By the end of the week he is getting up early every day and working into the night. He multiplies his profits quickly. Early in the second week he acquires a cart to transport several boxes of tomatoes at a time, but before a month is up he sells the cart to buy a broken-down pickup truck. At the end of a year he owns three old trucks.

His two sons have left their neighborhood gangs to help him with the tomato business, his wife is buying the tomatoes, and his daughter is taking night courses at the community college so she can keep books for him. By the end of the second year he has a dozen very nice used trucks and employs fifteen previously unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. He continues to work hard.Time passes and at the end of the fifth year he owns a fleet of nice trucks and a warehouse that his wife supervises, plus two tomato farms that the boys manage. The tomato company's payroll has put hundreds of homeless and jobless people to work. His daughter reports that the business grossed a million dollars. Planning for the future, he decides to buy some life insurance.

Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. Then the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically.

When the man replies that he doesn't have time to mess with a computer and has no e-mail address, the insurance man is stunned, "What, you don't have e-mail? No computer? No Internet? Just think where you would be today if you'd had all of that five years ago!" "Ha!" snorts the man. "

If I'd had e-mail five years ago I would be sweeping floors at Microsoft and making $5.35 an hour!!!"Which brings us to the moral of the story: Since you got this story by e-mail, you're probably closer to being a janitor than a millionaire! Sadly, I received it also!!!

    Another story to ponder on...

    Story number 1:
    Being nice…

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd."

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.

My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives." He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face.

It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to Private school before now.

I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends. He said yes. We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation.

I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak. Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.

He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.

    Boy, sometimes I was jealous.

Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

    "Thanks," he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story."

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.

He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.

"Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse.

God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.

    Look for God in others.

    Story number 2:

    Hospital Room..

We could all take a lesson from this and be grateful for what the Lord has blessed us with each and every day or our lives.....A great note for all to read, it will take just 37 seconds to read this and change your thinking.....

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats.

Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it. In his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

Epilogue: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy. "Today is a gift, that's why it is called the present."

    Hahahahaha...Another Joke!

A store that sells husbands has just opened in New York City, where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates. You may visit the store ONLY ONCE ! There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights. There is, however, a catch . . .. you may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up a floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband . . On the first floor the sign on the door reads:
Floor 1 - These men have jobs and love the Lord.
    The second floor sign reads:
Floor 2 - These men have jobs and love kids.
    The third floor sign reads:
Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love kids, and are extremely good looking.
"Wow," she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.
She goes to the fourth floor and sign reads:
Floor 4 - These men have jobs, love kids, are drop- dead good looking and help with the housework.
"Oh, mercy me!"she exclaims, "I can hardly stand it!"
Still, she goes to the fifth floor and sign reads:
Floor 5 - These men have jobs, love kids, are drop-dead gorgeous, help with the housework, and have a strong romantic streak.
She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor and the sign reads:
Floor 6 - You are visitor 4,363,012 to this floor.
There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please.

Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store. Watch your step as you exit the building, and have a nice day!

This is a beautiful poem written by Mother Theresa...Read it, reflect on it...and you will see how true the words mean - Ms Jessy

    Anyway

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered,
    forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of being selfish, having ulterior motives,
    Be kind anyway.

    If you are succesful,
    you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
    Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
    people may cheat you,
    be honest and frank anyway.

    What you spend years building,
    some could destroy overnight;
    build anyway.

    The good you do today,
    people will often forget tomorrow,
    do good anyway.

    Give the world the best you have and it may be never enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis,
    It is between you and God;
It never was between you and them,
    anyway. - Mother Theresa-

    Husband and Wife Joke...

Another good joke to share ...

A married couple is driving along a highway doing a steady forty miles perhour. The wife is behind the wheel. Her husband suddenly looks across at her and speaks in a clear voice.

"Darling," he says. "I know we've been married for twenty years, but I want a divorce." The wife says nothing, keeps looking at the road ahead but slowly increases her speed to 45 mph. The husband speaks again.

"I don't want you to try and talk me out of it", he says , "because I've been having an affair with your best friend, and she's a far better loverthan you are."

Again the wife stays quiet, but grips the steering wheel more tightly and slowly increases the speed to 55 mph.He pushes his luck. "I want the house," he says insistently.

Up to 60 mph."I want the car, too," he continues. 65 mph. "And," he says, "I'll have the bank accounts, all the credit cards and the boat."The car slowly starts veering towards a massive concrete bridge. This makes him a wee bit nervous, so he asks her: "Isn't there anything you want?"

The wife at last replies - in a quiet and controlled voice. "No, I've got everything I need." she says. Oh, really?" he inquires, "So what have you got?"Just before they slam into the wall at 75 mph, the wife turns to him and smiles....."The airbag."....

Never underestimate how a woman thinks.

Moral of the story:Buy Toyota VIOS as it has only one airbag (for driver only). The husband sure die and wife gets everything! So, for a husband don't buy a Vios today.... :) Husbands, pls take insurance! but.. think twice for MCIS insurance. Know why?" M.C.I.S "= Mati Cepat Isteri Senang

    UNIT 3: INFORMATION TRANSFER

Transferring Information From Non-linear to Linear information

Follow these few steps when interpreting non-linear data, and you won’t go wrong:

    · Introduce the non-linear data
e.g The chart/pie chart/ table etc highlights the percentage of….

    · State which is the highest data and which is the lowest. This is called COMPARING/TREND.
    e.g. - From the chart/pie chart/table, the
    highest/lowest…

    - There is a marked increase in the number of
accidents from year 1999 to 2000….

    · Give two reasons referring to the COMPARISON/TREND that you have given.

    Example: Non-linear to Linear Essay

Page 102 (text book) Task A

Failure Rate Among Foundation Studies Students in Cyber University in 2004/2005

The pie chart highlights the failure rate among Foundation students in Cyber University for the academic year 2004/2005 (Introducing your non-linear data). It is noted that the highest failure rate are among the engineering students while the lowest are the Law students with 41% and nine percent respectively (COMPARISON/TREND). The failure rate for Management students is two percent higher that that of IT students (COMPARISON/TREND). The percentages are 26% and 24% respectively. The high percentage of failures among Engineering students are due to the large number of students per class, where lecturers are not able to give personal attention. Thus, leading to insufficient contact hours for proper guidance to individual students. Another reason that leads to the high percentage of failure rates among engineering students would be due to the complexity of their core courses compared to courses taken by other majors (TWO LOGICAL REASON THAT CORRELATES WITH THE COMPARISON/TREND).

    Another story...

I was born in a secluded village on a mountain. Day by day, my parents ploughed the yellow dry soil with their backs towards the sky. I have a brother who is 3 years younger than me. I wanted to buy a handkerchief, which all girls around me seemed to have.

So, one day I stole 50 cents from my father's drawer. Father had discovered about the stolen money right away. He made me and my younger brother kneel against the wall as he held a bamboo stick in his hand.

"Who stole the money?" he asked. I was stunned, too afraid to talk. Neither of us admitted to the fault, so he said, "Fine, if nobody wants to admit, you two should be beaten!"

He lifted up the bamboo stick. Suddenly, my younger brother gripped father's hand and said, "Dad, I was the one who did it!"

The long stick smacked my brother's back repeatedly. Father was so angry that he kept on whipping my brother until he lost his breath. After that,he sat down on our stone bed and scolded my brother.

"You have learned to steal from your own house now. What other embarrassing things will you be possibly doing in the future? You should be beaten to death, you shameless thief!"

That night, my mother and I hugged my brother. His body was full of wounds from the beating but he never shed a single tear. In the middle of the night, all of sudden, I cried out loudly. My brother covered my mouth with his little hand and said, "Sis, now don't cry anymore. Everything has
happened". I still hate myself for not having enough courage to admit what I did.

Years gone by, but the incident still seemed like it just happened yesterday. I will never forget my brother's expression when he protected me. That year, my brother was 8 years old and I was 11 years old. When my brother was in his last year of secondary school, he was accepted in an upper secondary school in the central. At the same time,
I was accepted into a university in the province. That
night, father squatted in the yard, smoking, packet by packet. I could hear him ask my mother, "Both of our children, they have good results? Very good results?"
Mother wiped off her tears and sighed, "What is the use? How can we possibly finance both of them?"

At that time, my brother walked out, he stood in front of father and said, "Dad, I don't want to continue my study anymore, I have read enough books."
Father swung his hand and slapped my brother on his face.

"Why do you have a spirit so damn weak? Even if it means I have to beg for money on the streets, I will send you two to school until you have both finished your study!"

And then, he started to knock on every house in the village to borrow money. I stuck out my hand as gently as I can to my brother's swollen face, and told him, "A boy has to continue his study. If not, he will not be able to overcome this poverty we are experiencing."

I, on the other hand, had decided not to further my study at the university. Nobody knew that on the next day, before dawn, my brother left the house with a few pieces of worn-out clothes and a few dry beans. He sneaked to my side of the bed and left a note on my pillow; "Sis, getting into a university is not easy. I will go find a job and I will send
money to you. I held the note while sitting on my bed, and cried until I lost my voice .

That year, my brother was 17 years old; I was 20 years old. With the money father borrowed from the whole village, and the money my brother earned from carrying cement on his back at a construction site, finally, I managed to get to the third year of my study in the university.

One day, while I was studying in my room, my roommate came in and told me, "There's a villager waiting for you outside!" Why would there be a villager looking for me? I walked out, and I saw my brother from afar.
His whole body was covered with dirt, dust, cement and sand. I asked him, "Why did you not tell my roommate that you are my brother?"

He replied with a smile, "Look at my appearance. What will they think if they would know that I am your brother? Won't they laugh at you?"

I felt so touched, and tears filled my eyes. I swept away dirt
and dust from my brother's body. And told him with a lump in my throat, " I don't care what people would say! You are my brother no matter what your appearance is?"

From his pocket, he took out a butterfly hair clip. He put it on my hair and said, "I saw all the girls in town are wearing it. So, I think you should also have one." I could not hold back myself anymore. I pulled my brother into my arms and cried.

That year, my brother was 20 years old; I was 23 years old. I noticed that the broken window was repaired the first time I brought my boyfriend home.
The house was scrubbed cleaned. After my boyfriend left, I danced like a little girl in front of my mother, "Mom, you didn't have to spend so much time cleaning the house!"

But she told me with a smile, "It was your brother who went home early to clean the house. Didn't you see the wound on his hand? He hurt his hand while he was replacing the window." I went into my brother's bedroom.
Looking at his thin face, I felt like there are hundreds of needle pricked in my heart. I applied some ointment on his wound and put a bandage on it.

"Does it hurt? " I asked him.

"No, it doesn't hurt. You know, when at the construction site, stones keep falling on my feet. Even that could not stop me from working." In the middle of the sentence, he stopped. I turned my back on him and tears rolled down my face.

That year, my brother was 23 years old; I was 26 years old. After I got married, I lived in the city. Many times my husband invited my parents to come and live with us, but they didn't want. They said, once they left the village, they wouldn't know what to do. My brother agreed with them. He said, "Sis, you just take care of your parents-in-law. I will take care of mom and dad here."

My husband became the director of his factory. We asked my brother to accept the offer of being the manager in the maintenance department. But my brother rejected the offer. He insisted on working as a repairman instead
    for a start.

One day, my brother was on the top of a ladder repairing a cable, when he got electrocuted, and was sent to the
hospital. My husband and I visited him at the hospital. Looking at the white gypsum on his leg, I grumbled,
"Why did you reject the offer of being a manager? Managers won't do something dangerous like that. Now look at you, you are suffering a serious injury. Why didn't you just listen to us?"

With a serious expression on his face, he defended his decision, "Think of brother-in-law. He just became the director, and I being uneducated, and would become a manager, what kind of rumors would fly around?"

My husband's eyes filled up with tears, and then I sai d, "But you lack in education only because of me!"
"Why do you talk about the past?" he said and then he held my hand. That year, he was 26 years old and I was 29
    years old.

My brother was 30 years old when he married a farmer girl from the village.
During the wedding reception, the master of ceremonies asked him, "Who is the one person you respect and love the most?"

Without even taking a time to think, he answered," My sister." He continued by telling a story I could not even remember. "When I was in primary school, the school was in a different village. Everyday, my sister and I would walk for 2 hours to school and back home. One day, I lost the other pair of my gloves. My sister gave me one of hers. She wore only one glove and she had to walk far. When we got home, her hands were trembling because of the cold weather th at she could not even hold her chopsticks.
From that day on, I swore that as long as I live, I would take care of my sister and will always be good to her."

Applause filled up the room. All guests turned their attention to me. I found it hard to speak, "In my whole life, the one I would like to thank most is my brother," And in this happy occasion, in front of the crowd, tears were rolling down my face again.

Note: Love and care for the one you love every single days of your life.
You may think what you did is just a small deed, but to that someone, it may mean a lot.

    Spread of HIV in Malaysia

Refer to page 102 and complete Task B.

I have read your essays and the major problem among most of you is your language. I'm sure you are aware that they only way to improve in your language is to use it. Do speak, read and WRITE more to improve. REMEMBER, as i mentioned in class during our first meeting; ENGLISH IS THE FUNDAMENTAL OF ALL SUBJECTS. IT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT! :)

Do have a look at the sample answer for this particular question.

The pie chart above shows the spread of HIV in Malaysia from year 1990 till 2000. Each slice represents the percentage of HIV spread carried by different groups of people. From the pie chart, factory workers show the highest percentage of spreading the disease with 41% while the lowest are students with only one percent, thus showing a difference of 40%. The chart shows that factory workers contribute most to the spread of HIV in Malaysia. Their working environment contributes to this trend because most factory workers work in shifts which, encourages sexual freedom among them. This is due to the lack of awareness among them on how HIV can spread. Students on the other hand have the lowest percentage because at their age, their actions are very much controlled by their parents. (136 words)

    Skimming and Scanning

    Skimming

    1. Introduction

    • Is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text.
    • Reading the newspaper: you're probably not reading it word-by-word, instead you're scanning the text.
    • Done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time. Use skimming when you want to see if an article may be of interest in your research.

    2. Strategies

    • read the first and last paragraphs using headings, summarizes and other organizers as they move down the page or screen.
    • read the title, subtitles, subheading, and illustrations.
first sentence of each paragraph (seeking specific information rather than reading for comprehension).
    • to find dates, names, and places. It might be used to review graphs, tables, and charts.

    Scanning

    • is a technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary.
    • You search for key words or ideas.
    • In most cases, you know what you're looking for, so you're concentrating on finding a particular answer.
    • Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases.
    • Scanning is also used when you first find a resource to determine whether it will answer your questions. Once you've scanned the document, you might go back and skim it.
    • When scanning, look for the author's use of organizers such as numbers, letters, steps, or the words, first, second, or next.
    • Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color.
    • Sometimes the author will put key ideas in the margin.
    • Reading off a computer screen has become a growing concern. Research shows that people have more difficulty reading off a computer screen than off paper. Although they can read and comprehend at the same rate as paper, skimming on the computer is much slower than on paper.

    Something to Ponder....

    Dear All,

Below is a story i i received through email from a friend of mine. It brought tears to my eyes s my mother is suffering from cancer. I find it so difficult at times to support her emotionally but this story reminds me that life is short and there is always a chance that I will lose her through cancer. Thus, this story teaches us never to take the people around us for granted...never...

    A Beautiful Story

After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said I love you but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my MOTHER, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.

That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie. "What's wrong, are you well," she asked? My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.

"I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you," I responded. "Just the two of us." She thought about it for a moment, and then said, "I would like that very much." That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she, too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an angel's.

"I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son, and they were impressed, "she said, as she got into the car."They can't wait to hear about our meeting".

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entries, I lifted my eyes and saw Mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips.

"It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small," she said. "Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favor," I responded. During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation - nothing extraordinary, but catching up on recent events of each other's life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you." I agreed. "How was your dinner date?" asked my wife when I got home. "Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined," I answered. A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn't have a chance to do anything for her.

Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined.

An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I wasn't sure that I could be there; but nevertheless, I paid for two plates - one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son."

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: "I LOVE YOU!" and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than God and your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till "some other time."

Pass this along to everyone with an aging parent, to a child, to an adult, to anyone with a parent. Here's hoping today is better than yesterday and tomorrow is even better!
